In Tela, Honduras, 17-year-old mother Ana Gomez found out she had Zika during her pregnancy when she had an ultrasound. Her son, Tyler Jafeth Gomez, 2 months old, is affected by Congenital Zika Syndrome. He was born with microcephaly, a congenital malformation resulting in smaller than normal head size, caused by Zika. Tyler also suffers from arthrogryposis, where the joints are deformed and curved due to a contraction. Ana lives with her mother and her grandmother Dona Santa Gomez, who accompanied her to the hospital. The Zika virus can be spread by mosquitoes, from pregnant women to the fetus, through sex, and through blood transfusion.
