The grandchildren of Esther Ayoo, a resident of Adit Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Minakulu, Northen Uganda, lie under a mosquito net in preparation for bedtime. Different NGOs, including AFFORD, a USAID funded Health Marketing Initiative, give free nets to the camp residents who cannot afford to protect themselves against malaria. The nets keep off mosquitos which spread malaria parasites. Minakulu IDP camp is just one of hundreds of such camps created by the government to protect civilians from rebel attacks during the civil war that has rocked Northen Uganda for the last 20 years. Malaria is one of the leading killer diseases in protected camps.
