1. Photographer Spotlight - Arturo Sanabria
![]()
Arturo Sanabria is a Mexican physician with a passion for photography and a specialization in public health. Dr. Sanabria has more than 27 years experience working with the indigenous peoples of South East Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Southern Africa. For the past 15 years Dr. Sanabria has been studying the cultural aspects of sexuality in countries such as Mexico, Dominican Republic, Mozambique and East Timor. In speaking about knowledge exchange Dr. Sanabria, says, “I believe it is important to receive knowledge, not just give it.” Dr. Sanabria truly believes that participative and cooperative relationships between health workers and the community allow for the best results.
Dr. Sanabria has committed himself to sharing his knowledge and experiences in order to empower others and foster self reliance. “I think that health is an essential aspect of Human Rights, and is feasible under the principles of: equity, justice, liberty, dignity, and respect for diversity”, says Dr. Sanabria; adding “My goal in public health is to contribute to the evolution of the health care practices away from a paternalistic, top down, curative, individualized and “medicalized” model, towards a participative, promotional, preventive, holistic, communitarian pattern, supporting and expanding effective, proven health interventions.”
From the beginning of his professional life (1980), Dr Sanabria discovered in photography, a world within the different worlds he confronted as a physician “I tried to capture what I saw and gave account of what my senses have been experienced, says Dr. Sanabria. “I think that human beings are subjective, symbolic, unique, multi-voiced, autonomous, imaginative, and most importantly myth oriented. A myth is any story telling in which the social and cultural environment reflects upon itself. Photography is an excellent way to create myths.
