2. Photographer Spotlight - Lee Mantini

Lee Mantini

Profile: Lee Mantini, pictured with an abandoned baby boy in Georgetown Guyana, is a Registered Nurse and the Chronic Disease Management Coordinator for the Prince Edward Family Health Team in Picton, Ontario, Canada.

In 1999, with the philosophy that 'if there is a will there is a way', this single mom, packed her bags and headed off to Bolivia on her first humanitarian medical mission. With two point and shoot cameras, one for photos and one for presentation slides, Lee photographed the faces of Bolivia and the realities of providing health care in the Amazon and in the altoplano of the Andes Mountains. Upon returning home, members of the mission team were so impressed by her photos that many ordered copies. Lee realized then, that she had managed to capture the essence and emotion of the experience through the lens of a camera.

This was a turning point for Lee and the beginning of her path towards a lifetime commitment to improving the health of those less fortunate than herself. In 2000, she once again embarked on a humanitarian medical mission. This time she worked in Guyana, South America, among the Amerindians in remote indigenous communities along the Pomeroon River and in the Rupununi. Again, orders came in for copies of her photos.

Lee has since completed, by distance education, both her Undergraduate and Masters of Health Science Nursing degrees with distinction, through Charles Sturt University in Australia, focusing on international health and development. In 2006, she was hired, by VON Canada, to work as an independent health and development consultant on the award winning CIDA funded project Strengthening the Public Health System in Guyana.

In January of this year, Lee was back in the air on her way to Africa to learn more about the health care system and the health issues facing the people of Botswana. With her first digital camera in hand, she walked the back roads in Gaborone, Botswana to get a sense of the urban reality, then traveled to Mahalapye to experience rural life. While off-roading in the Okavongo Delta, Lee came within a few meters of the most beautiful wildlife in the world, all captured digitally. She ventured into Zambia, to Songwe Village and photographed the incredible Zambian landscape and sunsets before heading back to Botswana to meet with doctors and nurses in hopes of gaining a better understanding of the challenges facing local health care providers. All the while, Lee was searching for the best shots to send to Photoshare to add to the growing on-line collection.

'Photography allows me to visually express what often times I cannot adequately put into words. A split second in time can be eternal through a good photograph. My life has been forever changed by the many memorable moments accumulated through working in developing countries. These moments have impacted on how I think, how I exist and especially on how I nurse.'

'Submitting photos to Photoshare is a great opportunity to help not-for-profit organizations worldwide to develop outstanding brochures and presentations. My submissions to Photoshare are all about giving back…giving back to the people of the developing world who have taught me more than I could ever teach them. I will never be able to fully express my gratitude but I am attempting to, one photo at a time.'
