Profile: Anil Gulati is an enthusiastic amateur photographer. In addition to a skillful eye, Anil brings more then seventeen years experience in working with various civil society organizations from both the non-profit and corporate sector.
Anil’s interest in photography developed while using an old manual Kodak film camera; a lack of formal training and resources limited Anil’s ability. A major change for Anil came with the acquisition of his first digital camera. This was the opportunity to experiment that Anil sought and in turn allowed him to further his efforts to communicate the world around him through photography. Anil began in earnest to document his environment and the people he encountered in his travels. Anil’s digital camera has become his best travel companion, “I find it gives a real world of expression to things happening around us,” he says. Anil currently uses a D70, his photographs have been used by various UN organizations such as UNICEF, UNAIDS and UNIFEM, and are a favorite among users of Johns Hopkins University’s Photoshare web site.
While photography is not Anil’s official career path his “learning by practice” training has allowed him to give voice to many issues concerning the environment and the realities of human life. Anil has found Photoshare a great tool in this effort, he says, “Photoshare is the best place for people like us, who enjoy photography and want organizations to take advantage of our work for the benefit of people.”
