1. Photographer Spotlight - Marcel Reyners

Marcel Reyners of Belgium, seen here providing training in minor surgery to general physicians in Albania (second from right in red sweater), found photography to be extremely helpful during his medical studies in Obstetrics and Gynecology more than 30 years ago. He made thousands of slides and spent many weekends in the office to frame, compare, and store photographs for the purpose of aiding in objective follow-up of treatment of pre-cancerous lesions in patients...read full story

2. Development Photography Award

Announcing the winner of Photoshare's 2006  Development Photography Award

Sponsored by Nikon and the INFO Project at Hopkins’ CCP with support from USAID

Photoshare is pleased to announce the winner of the 2006 Photoshare Development Photography Award. This award, sponsored by Nikon and awarded exclusively to a photographer from a developing country, is part of Photoshare’s efforts to promote photography as a tool for communicating health and development issues. The winner of this award will receive a brand new Nikon Coolpix 4800 Digital Camera (4 megapixels).

Photographers nominated themselves by submitting an application along with sample photos. Photoshare sought applicants from developing countries who are:
  •  involved in public health and development programs;
  • interested in using photography to document issues facing their communities;
  •  in need of a first-time or improved digital camera.
Within one month, Photoshare received applications from 39 photographers in 18 countries:

Congratulations to: Nathalie Raharilaza, Madagascar

Natalie Raharilaza, is a naturally gifted photographer with a passion for photography that is only unequaled by her lack of a camera. “I am sure that I could carry out a good number of reportages if I had my own camera,” says Raharilaza. Natalie works in the field of rural development and environmental protection and says, “The use of art is not very widespread in the Malagasy culture and so there is a huge potential for using images to get important messages across in creative ways.”  Raharilaza says, “I had the opportunity to film a documentary on integrated health and environment activities which confirmed my love of communication for the promotion of development. I have always been interested in the question of how to translate knowledge into action in order to benefit communities.”
Natalie Raharilaza is affiliated with Ny Tanintsika ('Our Land'), A Malagasy NGO working in community development and land management issues.
