In the foothills of the Southern Drakensberg Mountains in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa, rural residents wait to be seen at a temporary medical station. Although all South African residents have the right to free medical treatment and medication, many rural residents cannot exercise this right due to the remote locations of their homes. With support and funding of Oxfam Australia through the Provincial Primary Health Care Organisation (PPHC) in KwaZulu-Natal, mobile clinics are able to administer much-needed health care to these rural communities. Each patient carries a health record card, which they present to the nurses before receiving a check-up, and if necessary, further consultation. Farmers in the area kindly allow the health care staff to use their sheds as makeshift clinics. © 2004 Matthew Willman, Courtesy of Photoshare
