In the middle of the
Amazon jungle, young
boys play in the setting
sun as a man returns
from an afternoon of
fishing. In this remote
location, three days from
the nearest town by
boat, the people depend
entirely on nature to
meet their daily needs
for food and water.
As population growth
and environmental
degradation threaten
these areas, integrated
approaches to
development become
necessary to protect
biodiversity and promote
human wellness.

Orphans and vulnerable
children in the village
of Mwanganya, in the
Karonga District of
northern Malawi,
receive a meal of
nutritious porridge,
provided by an
international
humanitarian
organization. Without
the meal these
children receive daily
through this center,
many would exist on
only one meal a day.
Orphans and vulnerable
children are particularly
at risk for disease,
malnutrition, and abuse
as impoverished
communitites struggle
to take in those village
children left without
parents by the AIDS
pandemic.

A mother holds her
infant while waiting for
her other children at
an informal school for
slum children in Mumbai,
India. ONE International
has set up a small
school that aims at
educating the poorest
children from a nearby
slum community. These
children have no other
options as they have
newly immigrated to
Mumbai from other parts
of India and will not be
admitted into formal
school systems. This
mother has no source
of income or employment
so she comes to the
centre daily to help out
as needed while waiting
for her other children to
finish school. The school
provides education and
medical services to these
children, as well as
educating the parents on
the same, if possible.
