Digital Cameras
Photoshare frequently receives inquires from our contributors and users seeking recommendations for purchasing digital cameras. We are always happy to provide feedback about specific questions, but often we recommend starting with one of the many camera review websites (there are lots of out there). I’m partial to The Imaging Resource website: http://www.imaging-resource.com. I like this site because it provides a series of consistent test images from digital cameras. Reviewing sample images is the best way to gage the performance of the cameras image sensor. This allows consumers to compare highlight and shadow detail, as well as noise, color balance and sharpness. You may be surprised by what you find!
If you are interested in the technical aspect of how digital images are created you may benefit from reading the Wikipedia entries about CCD sensors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge-coupled_device), CMOS sensors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CMOS) and Photodiodes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photodiode.
Other considerations depend on how the camera will be used. (i.e. Will it fit in your pocket? Is the battery rechargeable? Can you change lens?) If you are purchasing a digital camera with interchangeable lenses, keep in mind that you can use many old 35mm lenses on a digital camera body of the same brand. You may also want to pay attention to shutter lag, that annoying moment after you have pressed the shutter release button and when the image is captured. For more information on this checkout a recent article in The New York Times about shutter lag in digital cameras: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/10/technology/10basics.html?ref=technology
Please feel free to share your favorite camera review website or Leave a Comment with your tips for choosing a digital camera.
