The End of Kodachrome

On Monday, Kodak announced that they will withdraw Kodachrome from the market due to a decrease in consumer demand. Much of this is attributed to the growing presence of digital technology that has become popular among photographers today.

When it was first introduced 74 years ago, Kodachrome was one of the world’s first successful color film available. Strictly black and white when exposed, the three primary colors are added in three separate development stages in order to extract the final product. Today, only one lab in Kansas still processes Kodachrome film. Although photographers have expressed their appreciation of the rich coloration and dynamic hues made possible by Kodachrome, contemporary photographers have shown a greater tendency to use newer technology to capture images.

Kodak has decided to give its last rolls of Kodachrome to well-known profession photographer Steve McCurry. His famous picture of an Afghan girl who graced the cover of National Geographic Magazine in 1985 was captured using Kodachrome. McCurry will shoot one of these last rolls to donate to the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film.
