Photo Contest Sponsored By Hopkins' Knowledge for Health (K4Health) Project

BALTIMORE - A strong portrait of a bed net covered child affected by malaria won 1st Place/Best of Show at the 6th Annual Photoshare Photo Contest. Somenath Mukhopadhyay submitted the winning photo in the competition hosted by the Knowledge for Health project (K4Health) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs (CCP) with sponsorship from HIFA2015 (Healthcare Information For All by 2015), a global campaign administered by the Global Healthcare Information Network.
The winning image taken in the village of Birbhum, India will support Photoshare’s efforts to promote photography as a vital tool in communicating international health and development. Photoshare offers images free-of-charge for nonprofit educational use. By facilitating photo sharing among public health professionals and photographers Photoshare has become a leading source for editorial health and development photography. The Photoshare collection, consisting primarily of photos taken by in country photographers and public health professionals in the field, contains thousands of images illustrating the realities of urban and rural life in developing countries, as well as global efforts to improve and save lives, www.photoshare.org.
Open to amateurs and professionals alike, the contest drew interest from around the globe, including about 300 participants who submitted close to 1,200 photos captured in 82 countries. This year’s contest included two new categories, Malaria and Healthcare Providers. In sponsorship with HIFA2015 (Healthcare Information For All by 2015), the winner of the Healthcare Providers category was recognized with the HIFA2015 Photo Award, www.hifa2015.org.

Dr. Arturo Sanabria
Arturo Sanabria is a Mexican physician with a passion for photography and a specialization in public health. Dr. Sanabria has more than 27 years experience working with the indigenous peoples of South East Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Southern Africa. For the past 15 years Dr. Sanabria has been studying the cultural aspects of sexuality in countries such as Mexico, Dominican Republic, Mozambique and East Timor. In speaking about knowledge exchange Dr. Sanabria, says, "I believe it is important to receive knowledge, not just give it." Dr. Sanabria truly believes that participative and cooperative relationships between health workers and the community allow for the best results.

An active health professional, Dr. Sanabria has traveled in numerous regions, empowering local communities and capturing a shared experience.
